Medical Laboratory Week is April 11-April 17, 2021!
Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLTs) and Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technicians (MLA/Ts) serve a crucial role in healthcare, conducting approximately 244.8 million lab tests annually for Ontario’s population of 14.75 million. Although the pandemic this past year has added 11+ million PCR tests, Medical Laboratory Professionals do way more than COVID-19 testing.

Thank you to all of you guys for the hard work you are doing. We will all be forever grateful and look forward to putting Covid-19 behind us once and for all! Lots of 'air hugs' lol :)
I am curious to know what the general consensus is on cloth face masks. Some say they do not good since virus particles are so small and can penetrate right through...Others say any small barrier is better than none and can't hurt as long as they are washed regularly... Curious to know what the medical lab world has to say.
Hello Angie,
We are all looking for good solutions for protection but, what I can tell you is that a false sense of protection is a lot more dangerous than knowing the risks and going to facts. Hand washing works. Wearing an N95 that is fitted works to protect the worker in the hospitals. Wearing a surgical certified medical mask to protect others work providing you have clean hands when placing it on correctly (an many don't), not touching it at all (many do) and removing it with clean hands. Never re-use a dirty mask. Touching your mask with dirty hands is really risky. It makes all of us working in labs very nervous when we go to get some groceries and see how others use their gloves everywhere (no hand washing), touch their badly installed masks and actually think they are safe doing so.
For me and my work as a Virology/Microbiology lab manager, I stick to the facts. This document did help me to make good decisions for my staff. https://www.publichealthontario.ca/-/media/documents/ncov/covid-wwksf/what-we-know-public-masks-apr-7-2020.pdf?la=en
Hope this helps you
Keep safe

Hi Ann, so sorry to hear about your daughter--you should check with your doctor to get an update on the results.
@MLPAO She has checked with her Dr. and the Dr. hasn't rec'd results yet either....where else do u turn in these situations.....worried worried for her.....should she go to emerg...they are suggesting u don't do that but she is not getting better
@annj.byrne Her doctor should be able to recommend the best course of action. She can also take the self-assessment and you can call Telehealth Ontario for medical advice - https://www.ontario.ca/page/get-medical-advice-telehealth-ontario.
Thank you for working harder then ever, for going in everyday and making sure our world can work towards a healthy place. Shout to the staff at Joe Brant Hospital, Burlington; the Lady Dunn Hospital, Wawa and all hospitals lab tech in Ontario
