Post-Implementation Evaluation of the First Year of HPV Primary Screening in Ontario: A Northeast Ontario Perspective

- Ontario’s transition from cytology-based cervical screening to human papillomavirus (HPV) primary screening represents a major modernization of the Ontario Cervical Screening Program. Implemented on March 3, 2025, the change introduced HPV testing as the primary screening test, with reflex cytology and partial genotyping used to stratify risk and guide follow-up. This presentation is a first-year post-implementation evaluation from a Northeast Ontario perspective, with attention to rural and northern access, laboratory workflows, provider readiness, and patient communication. Highlighted are early successes, implementation gaps, and practical quality-improvement priorities for sustaining HPV primary screening across the region.
